October 2026 Visa Bulletin: FY 2027 Reopens the Green Card Lines

October is the month a lot of people in the US expat world circle in red. It is when the new visa bulletin drops, when the tax extension runs out, and when half the paperwork you have been putting off decides it is due. This year there is actually some good news in it, which does not happen every October.

The visa bulletin turned the corner

The October 2026 visa bulletin marks the start of fiscal year 2027, and that means a fresh batch of immigrant visa numbers became available on 1 October. When that happens, some of the queues move. This time, EB-2 India and EB-5 India Unreserved, which had gone dark in September, are back with final action dates. EB-1 India and every category for China also moved forward, in some cases by years.

The catch is on the other side of the page. Several employment-based categories for the rest of the world went backwards, and that includes the EB-3 queue US expats tend to watch. The State Department says the pullback is deliberate. It is a way to spread the year’s visas across the four quarters instead of burning through them by spring. Annoying if you are waiting, but it is not a mistake.

And the filing chart is open in October

For October, USCIS has said that adjustment of status applicants can use the Dates for Filing chart. That matters more than it sounds. The Dates for Filing chart is usually further ahead than the Final Action Dates chart, so it lets a much bigger group of people actually send in their I-485 this month rather than keep waiting. If you are in the US and your date is close, check both charts before you assume you are stuck.

The other October deadline

There is a second thing happening today. For Americans living abroad, 15 October is the extended filing date for a 2026 tax return, the one you get by filing for an extra extension on top of the automatic two months. The foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign tax credit only exist if you actually file, so people who skip it lose money they are owed. If you have been ignoring it, today is the day.

Why this one hits different when you live abroad

Visa dates and tax forms are the unglamorous side of an overseas life. Nobody moves to Lisbon or Mexico City to spend a Saturday on the USCIS website. But these are the things that decide whether you can stay, work and plan past next year, so they are worth an evening.

When you do get through it, the reward is usually a quiet night in. For a lot of US expats that means the evening news from back home, the late-night shows, or the game everyone stayed up for. That part is easy to sort out.
